What do I listen to when I'm in the studio? Well, I have to admit, I'm not much of a music listener. My preferred background noise is usually either a series I can binge on Netflix, a podcast, or an audiobook. It's tricky to find a series that I can follow without actually watching all of the action, which is why I've gone through the entire Gilmore Girls series three times. But when I do listen to music, it's either harmonic singer/songwriters, usually female. Some favorites are The Wailin' Jennys, the soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Mumford and Sons. I also love the old classics by Gershwin and Cole Porter. But my real weakness is Broadway. Tonight I discovered the show tunes channel on Amazon Music, and found some great songs from the newer shows on Broadway.
What may surprise you, is that I have a newfound passion for performing in musicals...strictly at the community theater level, ensemble-type roles, as my singing voice is not exactly Broadway-ready. I am living proof that you can take the leap and audition for a show, no matter how old you are, and you will not regret it!
Here I am, this past summer, gossiping about the local librarian to the very charismatic Harold Hill, in the Music Man. And then sucking up to the librarian later in the show.
